One of the great difficulties in recording is getting the signal in and out of the equipment you are using. Part of the difficulty is understanding the 'signal flow' and working out how to get the signal in, process it and get it out again.

Cubase SX presents some real problems and for further information you could check the SOS link on signal routing. The article is a bit longer than I would have wishes, but the diagrams are useful.

The main thing is to get on the desk and make sure you can

-input the signal
-use pfl and solo switches
-understand the difference between pre and post fade/eq/aux

and get the signal out of the desk into the effects rack and back again.
