Tutorial

The tutorial days are organised as workshops and in anticipation, I thought you might like a little more information about the event.

The first tutorial is an introduction to the course material and general information. I will cover some of the more problematic concepts found on the course. I will also spend some time introducing you to some of the technology you will become familiar with on the course including 'audition', a piece of recording software, and 'cubase', the midi sequencing and recording software used on the course. If there is time (and there usually isn't) we may look at other software some of which is 'freeware' and available on the internet.

The Dayschools.

Dayschool one will divide up into two sessions.Depending on numbers, we will divide you into groups or work together. If we are in groups, then Session 1 and 2 will be alternated so that you do both activities.

Workshop 1

Recording technology: from microphones to recording - an alternative course tune.

This session will be a practical session using audition and hard disk recording technology to capture and manipulate sound. Last year we produced an alternative course theme. This year, we will try to produce the album! Bring along an instrument (recorder, cardboard tube, or other portable instruments including your voice)

Workshop 2

Sequencing technology

This session will be an introduction to the sequencing technology used in block 3. I hope that an alternative, alternative course tune can be created.

TMA and Exam Support

This will be in two parts. I hope to spend a little time looking a the forthcoming exam, strategies for preparation and what we learned from last year.

The second part will provide individual support for those who have raised problems from their TMAs.

Dayschool 2 is in Scarborough where be borrow on of Hull University's recording studios for the day to record our very own course tune. From previous experiences, some may consider it as a 'coarse' tune, but we have great fun and you can't really get a better introduction to the art of recording. Bring an instrument, bring the family along (leave them on the beach) become a musician/recording engineer/producer for the day and then play the CD in the car on the way home. How is it possible to be involved in eduation and have so much fun?

The final tutorial will be in September and this is generally a revision session in preparation for the final exam. I was particularly pleased last year that we managed to get 4 distinctions from the group so something went right! I can't promise anything, but keep the day free in your diary.

Hope to see you there,

Bob
