'Thinking outside the box'.... is now a favourite slogan of the creativity lobby. That's fine, but how did people get into the box in the first place? Who took the undirected, creative thoughts of infantile play and separated them, socialised them, and cut them off from each other?

The undirectedness of proto-musical behaviours would arise from the fact that they draw on so many different domains simultaneously.... processes of enculturation or even of formal musical training can differentiate and progressively modularise...behaviours and their underlying representations into mature musical competences (Ian Cross, 1999).

The danger of thinking outside of the box is that we think ourselves straight into another one.
